5 Things To Do in Milwaukee This Summer: Festivals, Rooftops, Beer Gardens & Lakefront Adventures

Summer in Milwaukee has a way of slowing you down in the best possible way. The weather is nice, the days are long, and there’s so much to explore. Mornings start with coffee near the lake, afternoons turn into bike rides through the city (and perhaps a pit stop at a beer garden), and evenings somehow end on a rooftop patio while the skyline glows around you.

If you’re planning a summer getaway, Milwaukee offers the perfect mix of lakefront relaxation, outdoor activities, live music, food, and local charm. From festivals and rooftop patios to boat tours and beer gardens, there’s something here for every kind of traveler.

At Bromeliad Homes, we love helping guests experience Milwaukee the way locals do — and we love sharing our favorite local hidden gems.

1. Experience Milwaukee’s Summer Festivals & Concert Scene

Milwaukee truly comes alive during the summer months. Known as the “City of Festivals,” nearly every weekend brings concerts, food festivals, cultural celebrations, and outdoor events throughout the city. (Visit Milwaukee)

Some summer favorites include:

  • Summerfest
  • Pridefest
  • Wisconsin State Fair
  • Milwaukee Night Market
  • Mexican Fiesta
  • Bastille Days
  • Neighborhood food and art festivals

Summerfest remains one of the city’s biggest highlights, bringing major artists and live music right to Milwaukee’s lakefront every year.

Part of the magic of Milwaukee summers is simply walking through the city on a warm evening and stumbling into live music, local vendors, and outdoor patios full of people enjoying the season together.

2. Explore Milwaukee by Bike or Foot

One of our favorite ways to experience Milwaukee in the summer is by bike.

The city becomes incredibly easy to explore once the weather warms up, especially around the lakefront, downtown, and neighborhoods like Bay View and Historic Third Ward. The Oak Leaf Trail crosses the city and provides a scenic, green, and well-maintained path connecting downtown to the North Shore and you can find many parks, restaurants and beer gardens along the way for strategic stops. There are many Bublr rental bike stations in different areas of the city, especially downtown.

Some favorite biking experiences include:

  • Riding the Oak Leaf Trail
  • Exploring the Milwaukee RiverWalk
  • Cruising along Lake Michigan
  • Using Bublr Bikes downtown
  • Visiting neighborhoods like Bay View and Historic Third Ward
  • Stopping at Collectivo Coffee on Lincoln Memorial Drive for a coffee on the patio

One of the most walkable neighborhoods in Milwaukee is the Third Ward. There are so many shops, restaurants, ice cream spots and the Milwaukee Public Market, which has been rated one of the best in the country – if you visit, stop at the C. Adam’s Bakery for a sweet treat. Their cookies are amazing (and they have a gluten-free dairy-free cookie option that you would never be able to tell the difference!). The Milwaukee RiverWalk stretches through downtown Milwaukee and connects restaurants, brewpubs, shops, and lakefront views all in one walkable area. (Visit Milwaukee)

Milwaukee’s lakefront paths feel especially peaceful during sunrise and golden hour, making biking one of the best ways to experience the city at a slower pace.

3. Visit Milwaukee’s Beer Gardens

Beer gardens are part of Milwaukee summer culture in the best way. Across the city, parks transform into gathering spaces filled with string lights, live music, local beer, and people simply enjoying being outside. Milwaukee’s beer garden tradition dates back to the 1800s and continues to be one of the city’s most loved summer experiences. (Visit Milwaukee)

Some local favorites include:

Estabrook Beer Garden
Located along the river and near the Oak Leaf Trail, this is one of Milwaukee’s most iconic and loved beer gardens, and a favorite stop during bike rides or summer walks. They often have live German music playing (Tripadvisor).

South Shore Terrace Beer Garden
Known for beautiful Lake Michigan views, outdoor seating, and some of the best sunsets in the city. (Milwaukee County) On Saturdays they have an amazing Farmer’s Market with beautiful produce but also great food vendors.

Hubbard Park Beer Garden
A cozy beer garden tucked along the Milwaukee River in Shorewood with a relaxed atmosphere and strong local feel. (Hubbard Park Beer Garden) It’s right off of the Oak Leaf Trail, so perfect for a quick stop if you’re on a bike ride and need a hydration break.

War Memorial Beer Garden
Located near Milwaukee’s lakefront attractions and directly connected to the Oak Leaf Trail, making it a perfect stop during a summer lakefront day. (WAR MEMORIAL BEER GARDEN)

4. Spend an Evening on Milwaukee’s Rooftops & Patios

Milwaukee rooftops  are one of the city’s most underrated summer experiences.

There’s something special about sitting above the city after a long summer day — drink in hand, music playing softly in the background, and skyline views all around you.

Some rooftop favorites include:

The Outsider at the Journeyman Hotel
Known for skyline views, fire pits, cocktails, and a lively rooftop atmosphere. It’s in the heart of the Historic Third Ward and very popular. If you want to secure a nice seat, come early, it gets busy!

• Café Benelux
A European-inspired rooftop in Historic Third Ward that’s perfect for brunch, beer (they have a huge beer selection) and sunset views. The atmosphere is relaxed. This spot is very popular for weekend brunch/lunch, so we recommend making a reservation. Order the french fries with the basil and sriracha aiolis. So simple, so good.

• Pizza Man on Downer Ave (East Side/Murray Hill neighborhood)
This is an institution in Milwaukee. Known for its Milwaukee-style thin cracker crust pizza,  pastas and wine, PIzza Man has a cozy atmosphere and a small patio for al fresco dining. This restaurant is in our own neighborhood where the Belleview House is, just a few blocks away.

Milwaukee rooftops feel especially magical during golden hour, when the city lights begin to reflect off the buildings and the air finally cools down after the day. (Milwaukee Downtown 21)

Can’t find a rooftop nearby? We have a few patio options for you that won’t disappoint:

• Cafe Hollander on Downer Ave
From the same owners of Cafe Benelux, Cafe Hollander is a neighborhood institution. Located on Downer Avenue, just two blocks from our Belleview House, this restaurant has a lovely patio. The atmosphere is relaxed, the beer selection is outstanding, the food is solid. We love this spot and our guests do too!

• Harbor House on Lake Michigan
Bartolotta’s Harbor House Restaurant has a gorgeous patio right on Lake Michigan, by the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World. It’s close to the Summerfest grounds, so if you’re already heading there for a concert or festival, you must stop by Harbor House’s patio, enjoy a cocktail and some seafood fare like a lobster roll, oysters, or fried clams. The restaurant offers a great happy hour menu. Sunsets here are a must, so is a reservation. This place gets crowded quickly.

5. Get Out on the Water: Boat Tours, Lake Days & Summer Views

One of the best parts about summer in Milwaukee is how connected the city feels to the water.

Between Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee River, and miles of scenic shoreline, the city naturally invites you to spend more time outside. Milwaukee’s waterfront activities consistently rank among the city’s top summer experiences. (Visit Milwaukee)

One of our favorite ways to experience Milwaukee is from the water itself. Milwaukee Boat Line offers scenic river cruises, sightseeing tours, architecture tours, happy hour cruises, and sunset experiences through downtown Milwaukee. It’s one of the best ways to see the skyline, RiverWalk, bridges, and historic buildings from a completely different perspective.

Some of our other summer waterfront favorites include:

  • Kayaking along the Milwaukee River
  • Paddleboarding downtown
  • Bradford Beach afternoons
  • Sunset sailing cruises
  • Lakefront walks and bike rides

One thing we love most about Milwaukee summers is how easy it is to turn simple moments into memorable ones — watching the sunset from a boat, grabbing dinner near the water, or ending the night with a walk along the lakefront.
